Ayurveda & the Doshas
~an overview

Ayurveda is a close sister and companion to the tradition of Yoga.  The sanskrit word ayurveda literally means “the knowledge of life” or “the lore of living”. I love this concise description of the foundation of Ayurveda by Myra Lewin in her book Freedom in Your Relationship with Food:

This five-thousand-year-old tradition addresses quality of life and longevity. Living in harmony with nature as body, mind, and spirit is integral to the practice of Ayurveda. It is not just a feel-good strategy; Ayurveda returns you to your oneness with the universe and the Divine within you. Ayurveda looks at the individual and addresses lifestyle and conscious living in unity with all of nature. It contains a beautiful basis for reconnecting to your true self through food and consumption. The focus is on restoring balance within the body, mind and spirit. The approach is to eliminate symptoms by eliminating the cause.

Within Ayurveda, the entire cosmos is made up of the elements earth, water, fire, air and ether. These elements group into the doshas, which represent the basic functions in everyone and everything. There are three doshas: pitta, vata and kapha. A combination of these doshas make up your individual constitution. You are made up of the same elements that are found in every living thing in the cosmos… you are a part of all that is… and you connect to the all that is through these elements.  The following will provide a brief, general overview of each of the doshas:

Pitta relates primarily with the elements of fire and water. The Pitta within us directs body temperature, digestion, absorption, assimilation, and metabolism.  Characteristics associated with Pitta are hot, sharp, light, oily, liquid, and mobile. When pitta is out of balance, you may experience anger, jealousy, inflammation, and hatred. Pitta is intelligent, understanding, and manifests things easily when in balance.

Vata relates primarily to the elements of air and ether. The Vata within us directs breathing, muscle movement, heartbeat, and cellular activity. Characteristics associated with Vata are light, dry, cold, rough, clear, subtle, and movement. When vata is out of balance, you may experience fear, anxiety, and twitching movements. Vata is  creative and flexible when balanced.

Kapha relates primarily to the elements of earth and water. The Kapha within us directs the water supply in the body, lubricates joints, keeps skin moist, and supports the immune system. Characteristics associated with kapha are heavy, slow, oily, liquid, cold, dense, soft, smooth, and sticky. When kapha is out of balance, you may experience greed, attachment, hoarding, and congestion. Kapha is calm, loving and forgiving when in balance.

Discovering your individual constitution (a unique composition of all three doshas) brings greater awareness to the needs of your body and mind; the secrets of ayurveda give you the tools to bring yourself back to the balance that you crave.
